Check Engine Light On? Solid vs. Flashing, Common Causes, and Whether You Will Fail Smog
Solid or flashing check engine light? What each one means, why a lit light fails a California smog check, and where to get it checked around Sacramento.

Check engine light on: is it solid or flashing?
Short answer: a solid check engine light means your car found a problem, so get it checked soon. A flashing light means a severe problem, usually a misfire, that can damage the catalytic converter. Get it in today. Either way, a lit light fails a California smog check. Quality Tune-Up Florin, 2221 Florin Rd, can diagnose it.
The check engine light is your car's computer telling you it logged a fault. Techs call it the MIL, short for malfunction indicator lamp. On some cars it says "Service Engine Soon" or just shows a little engine outline.
When you first turn the key, the light should come on for a moment and then go out. That's a bulb check, and it's normal. What matters is what it does after the engine is running.
| What you see | What it usually means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Light comes on at key-on, then goes out | Normal self-check | Nothing. The system is working. |
| Solid light while driving | The computer found a fault and stored a trouble code | Check the gas cap, then book a diagnostic in the next few days |
| Flashing light | A severe problem happening right now, often a misfire | Slow down, skip the freeway if you can, don't haul a load, and get it to a shop today |
| Light plus shaking, a burning smell, or a red temperature or oil warning | More than an emissions problem | Pull over where it's safe, shut it off and call for help |
The California Air Resources Board (CARB) puts it plainly. A blinking light means something is happening that could be damaging your catalytic converter. The U.S. EPA's consumer guide on the check engine light gives similar advice. Minimize driving, and don't drive at high speed or with extra weight until it's fixed.

Here's why a flashing light is a big deal. When a cylinder misfires, unburned fuel goes straight into the exhaust. It burns inside the catalytic converter and overheats it. Drive on it long enough and you can turn a spark plug or coil problem into a converter replacement.
What usually turns on a check engine light?
Most of the time it's one of a handful of usual suspects. The light alone can't tell you which one. The stored code points us to the system that flagged it.
- Loose or missing gas cap. The EPA lists a loose or missing cap as one of the things the system can catch. If the cap clicks loose, tighten it and drive a few days. The light may go out on its own.
- EVAP leak. The evaporative emissions system holds fuel vapor so it doesn't vent into the air. A cracked hose, a bad purge valve or a worn cap seal can set a code.
- Oxygen sensor. O2 sensors read the exhaust so the computer can adjust the fuel mix. A lazy one can hurt mileage before you notice anything else.
- Misfire. Worn spark plugs, a failing ignition coil or a clogged injector. This is the most common reason the light flashes.
- Catalytic converter efficiency. The converter itself isn't cleaning the exhaust well enough. Often this is the end result of a misfire someone drove on for months.
- Chewed or damaged wiring. A sensor wire chewed by a rat can set a code too. Our post on rats chewing engine wires in Sacramento covers the warning signs.
One small tip from the EPA guide. Don't refuel with the engine running, since that can turn the light on.

Why is a lit check engine light an automatic smog fail in California?
Because the smog test checks the light and the car's computer directly. If the light stays on with the engine running, the car fails.
The Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) spells out the standard. The light must come on with the key on and engine off. It must go out once the engine is running. A light that stays on fails. So does a light that never comes on at all.

For most cars from 2000 and newer, the smog check is mainly a computer test now. CARB says tailpipe testing is no longer required on those. Cars from 1996 through 1999 get both the computer check and a tailpipe test.
Taping over the light won't help either. The smog equipment talks straight to the car's computer, not your dashboard.
Not sure when your car is due? Our post on Sacramento smog check rules by model year walks through it. Sacramento County and the urban part of Placer County are in the state's enhanced smog area.
Why does clearing the codes right before a smog check backfire?
Clearing codes also resets the car's readiness monitors, and a car with too many unfinished monitors fails smog.
Readiness monitors are self-tests the computer runs on the emissions systems as you drive. BAR notes they have to run again after a repair or after the battery is disconnected. The same goes for a handheld scanner that erases the code. The light goes out, but the car now looks "not ready."
As of October 2026, BAR's OBD test reference allows this many incomplete monitors on gas vehicles:
- 1996 to 1999 models: any one incomplete monitor.
- 2000 and newer: only the evaporative system monitor can be incomplete.
BAR adopted rules effective October 1, 2025 that will eventually require every monitor that can feasibly be set. BAR says the current pass/fail criteria stay in place for now and any change will be announced well in advance.
So how long do you wait? CARB's advice is to drive the way you normally do for about a week or so. Here's what we'd do after a repair or a dead battery:
- Fix the cause first. If the fault is still there, the light comes back and the code returns.
- Drive normally for about a week. Mix it up. A few freeway runs on I-5, I-80 or the 50 plus regular stop-and-go around town help most monitors finish.
- Don't let it sit. A car that only goes a mile to the store and back may never finish its self-tests.
- Ask us to check readiness before the test. A scan tool shows which monitors are done. That saves you a wasted smog visit.
- Still stuck? Some cars need a specific drive cycle. BAR says the Smog Check Referee can help drivers who have trouble meeting readiness requirements.
What does a real diagnostic include beyond a quick code read?
A code tells us which system flagged a problem, not which part failed. A diagnostic is the work of finding the actual cause.
A parts-store code read gives you something like "P0420, catalyst efficiency below threshold." That doesn't mean the converter is bad. A leaking exhaust, a lazy O2 sensor or an old misfire can set the same code. Swapping parts based on the code alone is how people spend money twice.
Here's what our techs look at:
- Every stored and pending code, not just the first one on the list.
- Freeze-frame data, a snapshot of speed, temperature and engine load at the moment the fault set.
- Live sensor data while the engine runs, to see what's actually out of range.
- A hands-on check of the parts involved: plugs, coils, vacuum and EVAP hoses, wiring and connectors.
- Known fixes. Many makers publish service bulletins for common codes.
- Readiness after the repair, so you know the car is set for its smog test.
Computer diagnostics are part of our full service repair work. If a worn ignition part is behind a misfire, our tune-up service covers new spark plugs. Our post on what a tune-up includes in 2026 explains the rest.
One more thing worth knowing. CARB says California's emissions warranty requires the carmaker to fix any problem the OBD system detects on cars under 3 years old and under 50,000 miles. That's dealer work, so check your warranty booklet first if your car is that new.

Common questions
Can I drive with my check engine light on?
If it's solid and the car drives normally, yes, for a short while. Get it checked within a few days. If it's flashing, minimize driving, avoid high speeds and heavy loads, and get it to a shop right away.
Will my car pass smog with the check engine light on?
No. BAR's standards fail any car whose check engine light stays on with the engine running. A car whose light never comes on at key-on fails too.
How long after clearing codes can I smog my car?
Usually after about a week of normal driving, according to CARB. Some cars take longer. A shop can scan the readiness monitors first so you don't fail for "not ready."
Does a loose gas cap turn on the check engine light?
It can. The EPA lists a loose or missing gas cap as one of the problems the system catches. Tighten it until it clicks, then drive a few days. If the light stays on, have it scanned.
