What Is a Tune-Up in 2026? What's Included and Do Modern Cars Still Need One?
A modern tune-up means new spark plugs and an ignition check, not a carb adjustment. What it includes, how often, and where to get one in Sacramento.

What is a tune-up on a modern car?
Short answer: on a modern car, a tune-up is scheduled ignition maintenance, not a carburetor adjustment. At Quality Tune-Up it means new spark plugs, a check of the ignition parts your engine has, and the labor and adjustments to put it all in. We recommend a tune-up check every 30,000 miles.
People still ask for a "tune-up" at the counter, and that's fine. The word just means something different than it did in 1976, the year on our "Complete Auto Care Since 1976" signs. Back then a tune-up meant new points, setting the timing and adjusting the carburetor. Today the engine computer handles timing and fuel mixture on its own. What still wears out is the spark side: plugs, and on older engines the cap, rotor and points.
We do tune-ups at all six Quality Tune-Up Shops, from Douglas Blvd in Roseville to Florin Rd in South Sacramento. The full list of shops, with addresses and phone numbers, is further down.
What's included in a tune-up at Quality Tune-Up?
New spark plugs, plus a check of the ignition parts your car actually has. Here's what our tune-up service covers:
- New spark plugs. This is the main event on any car built in the last few decades.
- New points, if your car has them. That's mostly classic cars at this point.
- A check of the condenser, rotor and distributor cap, if equipped. Plenty of engines from the 1990s still use a distributor.
- Labor to install the parts and any adjustments the engine needs.
Two things are not part of the basic tune-up. Drivability diagnostics, for a car that runs rough or has a code stored, can be extra. Internal or sealed carburetor adjustments are not included either. If your car needs diagnosis, we'll tell you before we start.
On most newer engines, each plug has its own ignition coil sitting right on top of it. The coils come off to get the plugs out, so we get a good look at them along the way.

While the car is in, we also look at your engine and cabin air filters. That happens any time your car is in for service. If the fuel system needs attention, our fuel system maintenance service is a separate job. We recommend it when we change a dirty air filter or fuel filter, or when we do a tune-up. Our post on whether fuel system cleaning is worth it goes into more detail.
How often do you need a tune-up?
We recommend bringing your car in for a tune-up check every 30,000 miles. The plugs themselves get replaced on the schedule in your owner's manual.
That schedule varies a lot, even inside one model. Toyota's 2026 Camry Warranty and Maintenance Guide calls for new spark plugs at 120,000 miles. The 2024 Camry guide put the V6 (Toyota's 2GR-FKS engine) at 60,000 miles or 72 months. Same nameplate, half the interval.
| Item | When | Where the number comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Tune-up check | Every 30,000 miles | Quality Tune-Up's recommendation |
| Spark plugs, 2026 Toyota Camry | 120,000 miles | Toyota 2026 Camry Warranty and Maintenance Guide |
| Spark plugs, 2024 Camry V6 (2GR-FKS) | 60,000 miles or 72 months | Toyota 2024 Camry Warranty and Maintenance Guide |
| Spark plugs, your car | Varies by engine | Your owner's manual or maintenance guide |
| Engine air filter | Every other oil change, as a rule of thumb | Our air filter page; check your manual too |

Don't have the manual? We can look up the factory schedule for your car. Ask at the counter.
What are the signs your car needs a tune-up?
A car that idles rough, starts hard or feels weak on the freeway is telling you something. These are the seven we hear about most:
- Check engine light on. It means the computer found a problem. If it's flashing, the EPA says that signals a severe misfire that can damage the catalytic converter. Slow down and get it in soon.
- Rough idle. The car shakes at a red light on Florin Rd or Arden Way, then smooths out once you're moving.
- Hard starts on cold mornings. Worn plugs need more voltage to fire. NOAA's normals put the average December low at Sacramento Executive Airport at 38.5°F, and that's when a tired ignition shows itself.
- A stumble when you get on it. You feel a hiccup merging onto the 50 or Business 80.
- Lower gas mileage. Track it at the pump. A sudden drop is a clue.
- Weak pulling on grades. The car struggles up I-80 past Auburn on the way to Tahoe.
- A failed smog check. Misfires can show up as an emissions problem.
None of these prove it's the plugs. A vacuum leak or a bad sensor can feel the same. That's why it pays to pull codes and look before buying parts. Our post on dashboard warning lights explains what the check engine light can mean.
Tune-up vs. oil change vs. factory scheduled maintenance: what's the difference?
An oil change is oil and a filter. A tune-up is plugs and ignition. Factory scheduled maintenance is everything your manual lists at a given mileage, which can include both.
| Service | What it covers | How often |
|---|---|---|
| Oil change | New oil and oil filter. We pour Chevron and Havoline lubricants. | On your manual's schedule or your oil-life monitor |
| Tune-up | New spark plugs, ignition parts if equipped, labor and adjustments | Check every 30,000 miles; plugs per your manual |
| Factory scheduled maintenance | The full list your owner's manual calls for at that mileage | Your manual's intervals |
If your car is still under warranty, you don't have to go to the dealer to keep the factory schedule current. Our factory scheduled maintenance page explains how that works. Your service advisor can also print the factory maintenance list for your car on request.

Will a tune-up improve gas mileage?
It can if something is actually wrong, like a worn plug that misfires. On a healthy modern engine, don't expect a big jump.
Here's an honest one. A new engine air filter makes a car breathe better, but on fuel-injected engines it doesn't raise MPG. That's from the U.S. Department of Energy and EPA's fueleconomy.gov. It can help acceleration, though. On an old carbureted engine, a fresh filter can help both by a few percent.

The same page lists other fixes that do matter. Using the motor oil grade your manual calls for can improve mileage by 1 to 2 percent. And if your check engine light is on, the page says to have a mechanic look at it, because the problem could hurt fuel economy and raise emissions.
What changes the work involved in a tune-up?
Mostly three things: how many cylinders you have, what plugs the engine takes and how hard they are to reach.
- Four-cylinder engines usually have four plugs in a row on top. That's the easy kind.
- V6 engines mounted sideways often hide the back three plugs under the intake. The Nissan SUV at the top of this post is a good example. The intake had to come off before our tech could reach the plugs.
- V8s have eight plugs, and some sit tight against the exhaust or the frame.
- Plug type matters. Some engines call for a specific long-life plug, and your manual lists the type.
That's why two cars can come in for the same "tune-up" and leave at very different times.
Why get a tune-up before a smog check?
Worn plugs cause misfires, a misfire can turn on the check engine light, and that light alone means you won't pass.
The California Bureau of Automotive Repair says it plainly: a vehicle will not pass a Smog Check with the check engine light on. Toyota's guide even notes that spark plug service is required under the terms of its Emission Control Warranty. Sacramento County is in California's enhanced smog program, with checks every two years for most cars.
One timing tip from BAR. If the battery gets disconnected during any repair, drive the car for a week or two before the smog test. That lets the car's readiness monitors reset. A tune-up won't fix every emissions problem, either. If the fail comes from a sensor or the catalytic converter, we'll find that first.

Common questions
How often should I get a tune-up?
We recommend a tune-up check every 30,000 miles. Replace the plugs when your owner's manual says to. On a 2026 Toyota Camry that's 120,000 miles, while the 2024 Camry V6 called for them at 60,000 miles or 72 months.
Is a tune-up the same as an oil change?
No. An oil change replaces the oil and oil filter. A tune-up replaces the spark plugs and checks the ignition parts. Plenty of people do both in one visit.
Will a tune-up improve gas mileage?
If worn plugs were misfiring, a tune-up can bring your mileage back. A new air filter on a fuel-injected engine won't raise MPG, according to fueleconomy.gov, though it can help acceleration.
Can a tune-up help my car pass smog?
It can if the problem is misfires or worn ignition parts. BAR says a car will not pass with the check engine light on, so get that fixed first. If the cause is something else, like a sensor, we'll diagnose it before replacing parts.
How long does a tune-up take?
It depends on the engine. Most routine service at our shops is done while you wait. A V6 where the intake has to come off takes longer, so ask for a time estimate when you book.
